April 1-5, 2009

Film Festival Explores History of Humor

Tampa, FL– Hillsborough Community College-Ybor City Campus presents the 7th annual Ybor Festival of the Moving Image, Wednesday, April 1 through Sunday, April 5, 2009. All events take place at the HCC-Performing Arts Building, Palm Ave and 15th Street, Tampa, FL, 33605.

*Master schedule at bottom of page.

The festival celebrates opening night (and April Fool’s Day!), Wednesday, April 1, 6:00 – 9:00 PM, with a vaudevillian-like stage show, live music from Hypnophonic Band, a special outdoor screening of a Buster Keaton classic silent film with a ‘post-modern’ film score played live, and includes a reception for artists Lori Ballard and Steve Smith, SIDESHOW WITH POSTAGE DUE, at the HCC art gallery. Free and open to the public.

This unique film festival offers an exciting spectrum of national and Florida artists presenting original works incorporating motion media into dance, theater, music and site-specific art, plus numerous lectures, multi-media presentations and film screenings. The theme for 2009: Humor and Satire.

Filmmakers, artists, authors and historians attending the festival will explore the social, political and cultural effects of humor on the history of film art, particularly in American cinema. Programming includes a special focus on the effects of 19th century European and American vaudeville and circus performance styles on the silent film era of the 1890’s-1920’s, including its continuing influence on contemporary comedies throughout all cultures.

Guests include the legendary Rosa Rio, who performed live music for the silent films of the 1920’s and is currently a theatre organist at Tampa Theatre; NYC dance diva (and comedienne) Claire Porter; Tampa actor/director Ami Sallee Corley with the premiere of a new multi-media play; Rob Mermin of Vermont’s Circus Smirkus examines physical comedy and the silent film age; author Shawn Bean discusses the original Hollywood (1908 Jacksonville, FL); historians Gary Mormino and Larry Elliston discuss/screen THE FLORIDA DREAM, a recent documentary for PBS; author/historians Bob Ingalls and Susan Fernandez share clips of comedy films with a Florida theme; Steve V. Smith looks at jazz music and Warner Brothers cartoons; Kristy Andersen shares her feature doc, ZORA (American Masters Series, PBS). Other guests sharing cinematic and artistic adventures include Lance Goldenberg, Tara Schroeder of Tampa Theatre, Fred Smith, Stewart Lippe, Paul Guzzo, Sarah Myhre, Charles Recher, Chip Neville, Ray Villadonga, T.H. Dohrman, Ann Prim, Chris Rutherford, Mark Barroso and much (perhaps too much?) more.

HCC is very appreciative of our generous sponsors whose contributions make our community richer in both our understanding of our cultural heritage and supports the continued growth of that heritage. Kudos to: The Arts Council of Hillsborough County; Florida Humanities Council; The Department of Cultural Affairs; State of Florida; Creative Loafing; WMNF Radio; Ybor City Campus SGA; Grown Man Brand and The Artists and Writers Group.

Screenings and lectures are $5.00, unless otherwise noted. Special performances are $10.00. Tickets are available day of the show at the box office located in the Performing Arts Building. Master schedule and details www.yborfilmfestival.com
