Checkers goes for bigger value, lower prices

I’m a victim of convenience when it comes to fast food. Because I work so much and often find myself stuck in long ruts of work where it’s hard to make food or sit down at a restaurant, I’m generally a slave to whatever food is close, cheap and easy. When I moved into this neighborhood, I inherited a Checkers as my local cash-and-crash fast food eatery.

I’ve never been a fan of Checkers, or of it’s northern counterpart Rallys. To me, the food was always really greasy, the service slow and the quality, even for the price, seemed to be unbalanced. Then I moved next to one, and I’ve started to come around to the idea.

There are some things on the menu that are still unbearable. Their fries, even when coated in chili and cheese, have the consistency of waxy cardboard. Their burgers, even when done right, still taste crappy to me. However, I’ve found a new love at Checkers… their Spicy Chicken Sandwich.

For a limited time, the Spicy Chicken is only $0.99, down from $1.49 regular price. A value, especially considering it’s always fresh and hot when I get it. Not healthy by any means, but what do you expect from a notoriously unhealthy value menu?

That said, there’s other palatable on-the-go values there. For that same limited time, you’ve got a couple of selections at $0.79, including the hot dog and basic hamburger. CheckerBurger, Spicy Chicken, Small Shake and Small Fries for $0.99. If you’re feeling a little saucy, I’d recommend the 2/$4 Double-Buffalo Chicken sandwich. Same chicken as the Spicy, just drenched in red hot and blue cheese. Again, not healthy, but cheap and decent.
